Community Development Watch was formed in 2000 by a group of concerned citizens worried about the overdevelopment of Hooper Avenue in Toms River.
It is a not for profit organization with the sole purpose of fostering responsible property development that considers:
- environmental concerns
- quality of life for surrounding residents
- adherence to current zoning laws
- adherence to community master development plans
CDW is a citizen action group. It does not concern itself with political causes nor align itself with political ideologies. The group mobilizes citizen involvement whenever it believes commercial developers place commercial gains over the good of the community.
CDW is a communications organization. By presenting the facts from public information such as planning board applications, zoning board variance requests and applications to the Departments of Environmental Protection and Department of Transportation, we enable fellow citizens to make informed decisions about the development going on in their neighborhoods.
We have challenged the following pending applications:
- Proposed Home Depot on Fischer Blvd. wetlands
- Proposed Pathmark construction on the heavily congested corner of Hooper Avenue and Fischer Boulevard
- Further development of the Town Center shopping mall in Middletown in an environmentally sensitive area
- Development of a 230,000 square ft. SuperWalMart on Rt. 37 in Manchester and Dover Twps. on non-retail, environmentally sensitive property.
- Expansion of the Rt. 166 and Rt. 37 shopping center that involves paving over a swimming pool/recreational area from an adjacent apartment complex.
CDW is comprised of environmental advocates, responsible property developers, community activists, communications specialists, local business owners, and most importantly, concerned citizens who believe the quality of life at the Jersey Shore is deteriorating due to irresponsible development.
